UN, Gov’t Assess Women's Empowerment Progress

The first joint review of harmonised interventions held on Friday in Yaounde.

Heads of various agencies that make up the United Nations System in Cameroon have praised the Cameroonian government for progress made so far in implementing joint projects aimed at empowering the woman.
Meeting in Yaounde on Friday, June 29 for the first joint review of harmonised interventions of UN-System organisations and the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Family (MINPROFF), the participants sought to reinforce the efficiency of the partnership between MINPROFF and the UN-System.
Opening the session, the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Family, Marie Therese Abena Ondoa, explained that the session was aimed at evaluating the level of implementation of a list of projects jointly identified in a document of harmonised interventions and whose implementation was monitored by a coordination unit put in place in 2011.
According to the coordinator of the said unit, Abessolo Asseko, 11 projects had to be executed through 54 activities in the domains of gender institutionalisation, capacity building for women’s involvement in politics and promotion of female entrepreneurship, among others. “Only seven activities were implemented,” he said. While noting that progress was recorded in the domain of sharing information, he prayed for the strengthening of the operational capacity of the coordination unit to enable it fully play its role.
On their part, representatives of UN agencies presented recommendations for greater efficiency in the implementation of remaining projects especially those contained in MINPROFF’s 2012 road map.
