Stabbed For Protecting Wife in Yaounde

‘Anglo’ had accused his colleague, Djoko Kandem Serge of having an affair with his wife.

A young man popularly known as ‘Anglo’ was on Sunday July 1 fatally stabbed on the back of the neck by his friend and colleague, Djoko Kandem Serge, 25, after he seized a ‘soya’ knife from a distracted meat seller. Both the assailant and victim are ‘drèche’ or corn residue sellers at a local brewery on Airport Road, Yaounde. At the scene at about 5.30 pm on Sunday, Anglo’s pool of blood was still visible though soil had been thrown on it.

According to an eyewitness and passerby, François Ngnyngkeu, Djoko crossed the road right in front of him in hot pursuit of Anglo. He then stabbed Anglo from behind before being overpowered by the crowd as Anglo began bleeding profusely. He was later rushed to the Yaounde Military Hospital where his situation as at yesterday July 2 was said to be stabilising. The angry crowd, including Serge’s friends, reportedly pounced on him before the police saved him.

Djoko’s friends and colleagues who thronged the Police Post at Trois Statues Junction, Mvolye where he was taken all blamed him for turning on his colleague, suggesting that he acted under the influence of hard drugs. A woman who claimed to be his sister in-law confirmed that Djoko was generally temperamental. A source at the police post said the incident happened after Anglo accused Djoko of having an affair with his wife. A remorseful Serge, with a swollen eye, kept pleading with his friends to help secure his release from the police post.

Both Djoko Kandem Serge and the ‘soya’ seller from whom he seized the crime knife were later moved to the 7th District Police Station at Efoulan for investigations.
