Highway Robbers Strike In Foumban

The SDO for Noun, Pascal Mbozo'o blamed it on lack of cooperation by judicial authorities.

Governor Midjiyawa Bakari of West Region cut short the epaulette award ceremony to recently promoted soldiers in Bafoussam on July 1 to rush to Foumban, Noun Division where highway robbers on the night of June 30 blocked the Foumban-Bankim highway with tree trunks before robbing passengers of money and personal belongings.

In a crisis meeting that held in the conference hall of the Noun Senior Divisional Officer’s office, Governor Midjiyawa Bakari called on the people of Noun Division to remain vigilant at all times and collaborate with administrative authorities and security men to curb highway robbery. Robbers, he said, have remained a threat to people in the area and travellers on Foumban-Bankim stretch of road. The Governor regretted that the highway robbers carried out their act near villages headed by traditional rulers who have the duty to identify all people living in their midst. He did not hide his suspicion that the highway robbers must be living around the villages where they operate because they do not have vehicles to go far away. He urged the village heads to create vigilante groups, instructing security men to carry out night patrols to check the activities of these men of the underworld.

On his part, the Senior Divisional Officer for Noun, Pascal Mbozo'o Nnomengong blamed the highway attack and recurrent crises on the highway in the area to the Legal Department in Foumbot that released some 12 highway robbery suspects a few days before the June 30 incident. He wondered why the Legal Department should release the suspects when investigations were still going on. He told the Governor and his team that the June 30 robbery must have been carried out by the same people arrested a few weeks earlier but were released by the Legal Department in Foumbot. Mbozo'o emphasised that with such attitude by the Legal Department, there was still a long way to get out of such crisis situation.

Meanwhile, before visiting the scene of the robbery, Governor Midjiyawa Bakari made a brief visit to Mbantou neighbourhood in Foumbot. He condoled with the Quarter Head, Nji Mbah Moulion Amodou, following the sudden death of 20-year-old Mefire Innoussa in Bafoussam on June 29 during an aptitude test for recruitment into the National Gendarmerie.
