Armed Banditry Resurfaces in Kumba

The population expresses fear about the security situation in the municipality.

The forces of law and order have opened investigations following an open theft that took place at the Ngassa Supermarket, opposite the Kumba Main Market on Thursday June 28, 2012. According to Mrs Ngassa, proprietress of the business unit, the thieves arrived the venue shortly before closing time, around 7pm.

She explained that they were armed and held her at gun point while collecting all the money found in the coffers at that moment. They further broke into her office and made away with an undisclosed sum of money, she narrated. During the scuffle, an unfortunate lady who came there to purchase some items had her handbag and car keys snatched by the hoodlums.

By press time, the exact amount of money stolen was unknown as the proprietress did not comment on the state of affairs. Though close sources hold that millions must have been stolen from the supermarket. It was equally believed that the theft was a planned act from within. The reasons advanced for this supposition is that it is alleged some workers were laid-off from their job some months back.

This incident has further increased the fears of the population about the security situation in Kumba. Within one month, armed banditry attacks have been orchestrated in over five homes in Kumba, though none of the culprits have been brought to book.
