INJS Grabs All Basketball Trophies

They emerged winners in both the male and female categories in the finals on Saturday.

After dominating the university games, the Higher Institute of Youth and Sports, INJS, is beginning to extend her hegemony in civilian sport competitions. INJS won the cup of Cameroon in both the male and female categories and also three of the six individual trophies put to play. In the finals which took place on Saturday, July 7th at the Yaounde Sports Complex, the INJS girls beat ‘Ecole de Basket’ of Douala 81-31 whereas the boys edged the team from the armed forces and police, FAP, 69-67.

While the girls had an easy walk over their opponents, the boys had an uphill task as both teams were equal in strength as reflected in the evolution of the scores; 8-7, 33-34, 50-48 and finally 69-67 in favour of INJS. In the veteran category, All Stars of Yaounde narrowly edged FAR Veto of Yaounde 50-49 in another tension-packed encounter. In the junior category, the Angels of Ngaoundere beat Flux academy of Douala 58-54. Trophies and cash prizes were awarded to the winners in each category.

The finals were presided at by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Adoum Garoua, who congratulated officials of the Cameroon basketball federation for seeking for sponsoring their own events. He called on other federations to emulate the example. He urged the winners to continue with the good performances at the international scene so as to make Cameroon proud. To the president of the basketball federation, Samuel Nduku, the balance sheet of the season is positive as the schedule was respected and both the championship and cup competition took place hitch-free. Focus now is on the upcoming U-14 championship next week and an honourable performance in upcoming international competitions.
