State Varsity Students Awarded Prizes

They are each receiving FCFA 50,000 from the Head of State.

Following a release by the Rector of the University of Yaounde I, students listed as beneficiaries of the excellence award for the 2010/2011 academic year, granted by the President of the Republic began receiving FCFA 50,000 each from various pay points located within the university campus as well as at the Higher Teachers’ Training College, the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the National Higher Institution of Engineering. Last Friday, July 27, a vehicle could hardly make its way into the University of Yaounde I campus as some beneficiaries of the grant had crowded the entrance of the accountant’s office wishing to collect their money.

One of beneficiaries, Susan Mayah, level three student of the Faculty of History expressed gratitude to the Head of State and the enormous joy she felt being part of the students to benefit from such a scholarship. While hoping to work harder this year, Susan Mayah says she will give the money to her parents as a sign of her appreciation for the efforts they are putting in making sure that she obtains a Bachelor’s Degree. Another beneficiary of the Head of State’s grant said she will give part of the money to her parents and use the rest to prepare documents and deposit for any public competitive examination. Most of the students said the Head of State’s grant has encouraged them to work harder next year so as to be permanent beneficiaries of the grant.

The accountant of the University of Yaounde I, Marie-Evelyne Ngolle V said after each faculty sent the names of students who could likely benefit from the Head of State grant, the names were sent to the Ministry of Higher Education for final selection. She said some 20,000 students from the University of Yaounde I are benefiting from the operation which is taking place at seven payment points. Marie-Evelyne Ngolle said over FCFA 953 million will be distributed amongst the beneficiaries. Before each student collects his money, he/she is expected to present his registration and school fees receipts as well as a photocopy of their National and School Identity Card.
