“Top 12 is the Number One Event”

Alfred Bagueka Assobo, President of the Table Tennis Federation.

Does the cup of Cameroon final signify the end of the season as is the case with other sports disciplines?

The most important event for us is the national championship for single events. We will be playing it next week. Since 2001, we have been organizing the “Top 12” competition which has become the number one event in Cameroon. We have already finished with the national championship for team events. Next week we will finish with the championship for individual events.

What is your balance sheet for the season?

We still have a long way to go with competitions before we can make a balance sheet.  After the Top 12, we will be organising the 4th edition of the SONARA international tournament with more than nine countries to take part. In October we will be organizing Grand Prix Ngaoundere. We have organised tournaments in Bamenda, Buea, Bertoua and have been playing regularly in Yaounde. So this time, we want to take tennis to the Grand North. CAMRAIL has already made a commitment to sponsor the event.

What explains your love for the game because besides being president you also play?

I discovered table tennis while in the secondary school at College Vogt in the early 70s. The person who taught me how to play tennis was Dr Abega. He used to play with the left hand. I fell in love with the game and I have been playing since then. In 2004, players asked me to come and run for the presidency and even though I was busy, I said OK. I will remain a player even if tomorrow I am no longer president because it helps even for health reasons.
