Last Chance for Lionesses At 2012 London Olympics

Despite suffering two consecutive defeats, the Lionesses are not yet eliminated.

All is not lost yet for the Indomitable Lionesses at the ongoing football tournament of the Olympic Games in London. Though having suffered two defeats in a row, mathematically the Lionesses are not yet out of the race for the knock-out stage of the competition given that the first two teams of each group including the best two teams, who emerge third at the group stage, qualify for the quarter finals. Hence, in case of a comfortable victory against New Zealand tomorrow, the Lionesses can still seal a quarter final berth.

Cameroon went to London with high hopes of making the trial stride and master’s strike but were humbled 0-5 by Brazil in their first outing in the competition on July 25th. On Saturday, July 28th, the Lionesses suffered yet another defeat, this time against the host country, Britain, who walloped Cameroon 3-0. Though Cameroon still has a chance of sailing through to the knock out stage of the competition, their chances are very slim given the number of goals they have conceded. The Lionesses have conceded eight goals in two matches and only victory with a large score margin, could enable them stay in the competition.

Meanwhile the second African representative in the women’s football tournament, South Africa also suffered a second consecutive defeat in the tournament as they were beaten 3-0 by Canada. South Africa however is in a better position than Cameroon having scored one goal and conceded seven. They were beaten 4-1 by Sweden in their maiden outing at the competition and again beaten 3-0 by Canada in their second outing on Saturday.
