The Reawakening of Yong Sports

They now occupy the runner up position in the MTN Elite One championship with 30 points.

While attention was tilted towards the heavyweights of the championship, Yong Sports like a thief in the night has been slowly but steadily making its progress on the classification chart. The lone representative of the North West Region in the Elite One championship beat the defending champions, Coton Sports 2-1 at the Bamenda municipal stadium in a match counting for the 17th day of play of the on-going division one championship. The victory propelled them from the 3rd to the second position, barely three points behind league leaders, which means if the championship was to end today, Yong sports will be qualified for continental competitions. This is a remarkable performance from a team that after the euphoria of ascension to division one had slipped into the oblivion, barely struggling to survive in the elite championship.

Meanwhile, Union thrashed Renaissance 3-1 to maintain their grip at the helm of the championship on 33 points while Coton Sport continued her downward glide ever since the resignation of Robert Boivin and his replacement with Gabriel Haman. Panthere were slowed down in their bid for the championship title this year by Canon of Yaounde who humbled them 0-1. The false step caused them to surrender the second position which they had occupied to bulging Yong Sports Academy of Bamenda. Despite victory for New Stars and defeat for Coton Sport, they both maintain the 4th and 5th positions respectively on the classification table.

As usual, there was movement at the bottom of the table where teams continues criss-crossing the relegation line. Thanks to the one-all draw obtained against Tiko united, Aigle of Menoua hopped out of the relegation zone to occupy the 10th position while Renaissance dropped into the red zone at the 12th position. After a promising start, newly promoted Njalla Quan Academy is languishing in the relegation zone with 15 points. Scorpion of Bé still occupies the last position despite obtaining a draw against Njalla Quan.

Unofficial classification after the 17th day of play.
