“I’ll Do My Best to Grab a Medal”

Thomas Essomba, Cameroon’s Light Flyweight boxer at the Olympic Games talks on his chances of victory.

  L’interview

How do you feel after your victory?

I feel very happy because it was not easy to beat the Moroccan. He came in very determined, especially during the early minutes of the fight. But I kept my calm and waited for the opportunity. When it came, I wasted no time.

You are the first Cameroonian boxer to move to the second round since the start of London 2012 Olympics. Does the victory add pressure on you?

For pressure, there isn’t any. It is unfortunate that my other colleagues and friends had to leave the competition early. From the beginning, we were determined to make Cameroonians proud in the Games. It is a pity that they are out.

Your next fight will be against Paddy Barnes from Ireland on Saturday. Do you know him?

Well, at this stage of the competition, you don’t make choices. You just need to keep preparing for the day, have confidence in yourself and God will be your helper.

What is your evaluation of the Games?

The Games are a great competition. The technical level is high and so one needs to be very vigilant. Apart from the professional aspect, it is a place to offer and learn. It’s also an avenue to meet different athletes, make friends, and above all, make your country known to others.

Do you have any message for Cameroonians?

I would like to say Cameroonians should pray for me. I will do my best to grab a medal.
