Reckless driving in the port city of Douala seems to be on the rise. A yet to be identified woman is said to be in a critical state following a motor accident in Bonapriso yesterday at about 1 a.m.
The Mercedes car, matriculated LT 470 DC, belonging to her and driven by her boyfriend, André, soon veered from the street and jammed against two electricity poles and an iron gate of the former SATOM Company base in Bonapriso. Following the hard shock, she sustained serious injuries all over her body after being flung to the macadamised street. Night watchmen around explained that André had been driving under the influence and control of alcohol.
The driver sustained no injuries but shock. Both were rushed to the Laquintinie Hospital where the woman’s condition’s remains critical. The next morning, André recovered and visited the scene to collect TV set and other items from the car.
However, the unforeseen deviation from the street as the car drove up to around Hotel de L’Air Junction could not easily be comprehended by most city dwellers. Douala’s accidents, sometimes grave ones, have gone on unabated despite City Council’s implantation of Highway Code along streets to educate drivers.
