Emmanuel Ngwe Claims Table Tennis Championship Title

He beat Jude Fonfo by four sets to two in a hotly contested final on Sunday.

After two unsuccessful attempts, Emmanuel Ngwe finally lifted the championship title in table tennis yesterday in his third trial. He beat Jude Fonfo 4-2 in the senior men’s category of the individual championship played at the gymnasium of the Higher Institute of Youth and Sports in Yaounde yesterday. The championship title is the second consecration for Emmanuel Ngwe this year after lifting the Chinese Ambassador’s cup trophy. Having dominated the national scene, Ngwe says his ambition now in winning the upcoming African championship and establishing himself as a great table tennis player internationally. The men’s senior category was the last of finals played in the minims/cadet categories, junior men, junior women, senior men, senior women and veteran categories which brought together some 81 tennis men and women.

Tayim Mercy continued her winning spree in the women’s senior category. After winning the Ambassador’s cup and Cup of Cameroon titles; she easily disposed of Germaine Sevidzem by three sets to zero in the ladies final to grab the championship title. In the women’s junior category, the ill luck continued for Ngo Baye who though technically and tactically strong, was beaten by Danielle Eyenga 3-2.

However, the revelation of the championship is the budding star, David Nikwango who beat Dimitri Nguepi 3-2 to win the 12th title of his career. Like Ngwe, Nikwango is dreaming of making a name in table tennis on the world stage. After losing the first two sets, Nikwango came from behind to win three straight sets to carry the day. Meanwhile the president of the Cameroon Table Tennis Federation, Alfred Bagueka, who was engaged in the competition as a player in the veteran category, was humbled 1-3 by visiting Paulin Vouffo from the Mboa tennis club in Douala.

The championship final also witnessed the donation of some table tennis equipment by a former player now based in Belgium. The equipment comprised bats and plastic materials for tennis bats. While other federations go for months without an activity, the tennis federation is booming with vitality with an activity taking place every week. After the Chinese Ambassador’s cup, came the Cup of Cameroon finals in club competition. The individual championship finals will give way to the Top 12 competition next weekend.
