The Lawyers Without Borders organised a one-day workshop for penitentiary in Douala.

Lawyers Without Borders in Cameroon in a bid to continue their fight to support female inmates, have organised a training workshop to sensitise penitentiary administrators in the Douala central prison. The training was based on communication in the cell and the environment. It was based on the rights of women and children in the cell.

In one of the lectures, A.P.P.S Engonga advocated for the creation of a booth in the prison milieu to enable inmates communicate by telephone. He used the Douala Central Prison as case study to present a practical mode of communication. After presenting the different modes of communication, he expounded on what stops understanding in communication and the solutions to the communication problems. As solutions, he said there should be a proper way to receive visitors of detainees and ensuring regulation in the use of telephone by inmates. He also said overpopulation of the cells reduces time to communicate sufficiently between inmates and visitors as well as insufficient personnel to control inmates, among others.

The importance of mobile phones to inmates was mentioned as a means to re-socialise them and to give them physical equilibrium in distant communication as well as instant communication. For the prison personnel, the use of mobile phones facilitates control, distance management and instant information. Emphasis was also placed on providing special attention to vulnerable groups such as women, children and strangers.

Interventions were also made by Barnabe Nekue and the Registrar of the Douala Central Prison. The Secretary General of Lawyers without Borders, Barrister Honoré Yana Ndzom, said they have instituted that women without lawyers will be defended by Lawyers without Borders. The training will equally take place in the Yaounde Central Prison and the Mfou Prison.
