Lawyers press Rights of Female Inmates

The lawyers without Borders organize a one day workshop with penitentiary Administration Douala.

Lawyers without borders in Cameroon in a bid to continue their fight to support female inmates, have organized a training workshop to sensitise penitentiary administrators in the Douala central prison. The theme of the training was based on Communication in the cell and the environment and based on the rights of women and children in the cell.


In a presentation by A.P.PS Engonga, on the theme of the training, he gave a definition of communication and said a jurisdiction should be made available in the prison milieu for inmates to be able to communicate by telephone. He made emphasis to the Douala central prison in particular to present a practical mode of communication. He presented the different modalities of communication, what stops understanding in communication and the solutions to the communication problems. As to solutions he said there should be a proper way to receive visitors of detainees, regulation in the use of telephone by inmates. As to difficulties in understanding; he said the over population of the cells reduces time to communicate sufficiently between inmates and visitors, insufficient personnel to control inmates among others.

He presented the importance of mobile phones to inmates whom he said is to re-socialise them and to give them physical equilibrium, permits distant communication as well as instant communication. For the prison personnel mobile phones permits them to facilitate control, facilitate management in distance, and instant information.

He added special attention in all these should be given to the vulnerable group which is women, children and strangers.

Interventions were also made by Barnabe Nekue and the registrar of the Douala central prison.

Me.Honoré yana Ndzom, Secretary general of Lawyers without Boundary said they have instituted that women without lawyers will be defended by lawyers without boundaries. The training will equally take place in the Yaounde central prison and Mfou.
