Farm Tools offered to Pig Farmers

Government intends to increase availability and affordability of pork in the Littoral.

Several farm implements have been donated to pig farmers of the Littoral Region. Ten farmers received a consignment of wheelbarrows, buckets, pulverisers, rain boots, brushes, cutlasses, rakes as well as several piglets and bags of feed.

In line with government’s project to enhance living conditions, fight hunger, encourage consumption of animal protein found in abundance in pork while striving towards a food-sufficient economy, the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation (MINRESI) put in place a 10-million project to vulgarise pig livestock in the Littoral Region.

According to the Head of the Division of Promotion and Innovation Support in MINRESI, Godefroy Ngima Mawoung, the three-year project, which ends this year, reiterates the determination to make use of results of research carried out to give a push to the economy. Speaking at the ceremony to hand over the donation to the beneficiaries in Bonanjo, Douala, yesterday, he said pig farming, which is an important aspect of agriculture in the region, is benefitting a lot from this effort.

According to the Head of the Littoral Regional Centre for Research and Innovation, Dr. Michel Ndoumbe Nkeng, expenses, performance, availability and experience have been invested in the sector. Several beneficiaries lauded the initiative saying it will help them meet up one of their most important challenges, often insufficient farming tools. One them said running a pig farm is highly expensive, needs care and proper sanitation, especially during this era of swine diseases. “I thank government’s consistent support,” he expressed.
