Barristers Sama Francis and Ngnie Kamga are to challenge incumbent Eta Besong Junior.
A Bar Council meeting scheduled for metropolitan Bamenda today, August 10, 2012 will set the pace for the elective General Assembly of the Council in the same town on August 11 and 12, 2012. In effect, the crucial assembly is expected to produce a new General Assembly Chairman and Bar Council President to chart the way forward for the nation’s practising lawyers.
The agenda features three rounds of elections beginning with the election of the Chairman of the General Assembly. The law, we are told requires that candidates for the job can only make known their intentions when the elections are called during the assembly. Thereafter, the assembly shall be expected to elect 15 members into the Bar Council before a Bar Council President is elected from among them by the assembly.
The representative of the Bar Council President in the North West, Barrister Kemende Henry Gamsey says some 52 candidates have registered to run for membership of the Bar Council, the governing or executive arm of the General Assembly. The lot includes five from the North West like Barrister Sama Francis, Kemende Henry, Nchunu Sama, Benjamin Suh Fuh and Ngala John Ngek.
As at press time, it was understood that some three barristers had stated preparedness to challenge the incumbent Bar Council President, Barrister Eta Besong Emmanuel Junior. Among them are Bamenda-based Barrister Sama Francis and Douala-based Barrister Ngnie Kamga.
Barrister Abdul Bagui who had earlier expressed interest pulled out at the last minute, saying it was for personal reasons. That apart, this weekend’s General Assembly will also feature a financial report and a report of the stewardship of the outgoing Bar Council executive.
