United States Tops London 2012 Medal Table

With 102 medals, they over-threw China, 24 hours to the end of London 2012 Olympic Games.

The London 2012 Olympic Games is now history. Sixteen days after the grandiose official opening ceremony, a lot of energy has been dispensed, excitement shared, ink flowed on the columns of newspapers and each nation bagging home what it had sowed.

As usual, no tsunami or earthquake was witnessed at the helm of the table. “Les Déjà Vu” are still at the top. Of the 931 medals dished out; 289 were gold, 291 silver and 345 bronze. The United States grabbed 102 of them; including 44 gold, 29 silver and 29 bronze. They were followed by China with 87 medals; 39 gold, 27 silver and 22 bronze. Host country, Great Britain won 63 medals – 28 gold, 16 silver and 19 bronze.

Of all the participating countries, the most remarkable team performance came from the British, “Team Great Britain”. Four years ago in Beijing, China, they took home 47 medals – 19 gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze. But 2012 has been a different story, as “Team GB” has been much better.

In individual performances, Usain Bolt of Jamaica and Mohamed Farah of Great Britain were outstanding. While Bolt wrote his name into the Olympic annals by becoming the first athlete to win the 100m and 200m track and field events in the same competition, Mohammed Farah – of Somali origin - goes into history as the first athlete to win the 10,000m and 5,000m events respectively.

That apart, of the 259 participating countries, 168 of them left the games without winning a medal. One country won a medal, 13 two medals, while the remaining 78 nations took home more than three medals from the competition.
