Green Economy promoted in Littoral

Some associations received from Government yesterday equipment to help fight climate change.

A campaign to plant trees and maintain existing trees has been launched in Douala with the donation of work tools to some associations to plant and maintain trees. The ceremony took place on August 27 at the esplanade of the Littoral Governor’s office.

Speaking on the behalf of the Governor, the Littoral Secretary General, Maurice Tchoffo Sa’a said the government promotes green economy because it fights against climate change. The region he added is the most affected zone as far as climate change is concern. He added that the government discovered the population is cutting down trees and not replanting so the negative effects of climate change is affecting the region. Therefore a partnership has been set up between the administration and Councils, common initiative groups, association and NGOs to assist in planting trees and maintaining them.

He lauded the Ministry of Forestry which has taken the initiative to refurbish the forest to fight degradation of the environment. This initiative he said is in line with the concept adopted in Rio+20 which is to Plant a tree. Finally he said the equipment should be used specifically for the purpose to which they are being handed.

The Regional Delegate of Forestry and Wild life of the Littoral, Issola Depanda François presented the equipment handed over to some CIGs which represented the councils of Manoka, Loum, Moungo Nkam, among others in the region. He said they will plant trees in schools to give shades and mangroves will also be planted in specific regions. The equipment involves, brush cutter, wheel barrows, hovels, hand gloves, engine saws, cutlasses, rakes for each of the divisions.
