“Our Motto Is Zero Absence, 100 Per cent Pass” [Interview ]

George Niba Suh, Principal, Government Bilingual Practising High School, Yaounde talks on the school's preparations for the new school year.

How prepared is your institution for the 2012/2013 academic year?

We have bought the daily record book of the school as well as other didactic material such as chalk. Yesterday morning, I had a meeting with the senior administration of the school to discuss ways of ensuring a smooth take-off of the 2012/2013 academic year. The administrative staff of the school, that is, the Principal, Vice Principals, Senior Discipline Masters and Secretaries resumed duty yesterday, August 27. Teachers will resume tomorrow for the 2012/2013 academic year. The school campus is currently crowded with old students who are paying their fees and I strongly believe that next Monday, classes will effectively begin.

Any problem encountered in preparing for school reopening?

So far, no problem has been encountered yet. The only issue is the huge number of parents who keep crowding the entrance into my office seeking admission for their children. But I have told parents to drop their applications and a commission for admission will later meet and they will select those whom they can select.

What balance sheet can you make of the previous academic year?

In the general Certificate of Examination Advanced and Ordinary Levels (GCE A/O Levels), the results were good not only in the percentage scored but also in the quality of the results. The Baccalaureate examination too was very good and I use this opportunity to congratulate the teacher and student body.

What has been put in place to ensure an effective school year at GBPHS?

During the senior administrative staff meeting of yesterday, the motto we put in place is “Operation Zero Absence and 100 per cent in all Official Examinations”. This is the message we are going to pass across to all teachers on Friday 31st August during the general assembly between teachers and senior staff of the institution. Teachers will have to ensure that there is no absences from their part or that of students and all their efforts should be used towards obtaining 100 per cent pass in the end-of-year official examinations.
