Yaounde City Council Closes Illegal Car Wash Points

The exercise is currently taking place in the capital city.

Since the setting up of the Mfoundi Divisional committee for the fight against urban disorder on May 23 this year, members have not relented any effort in curbing disorder in the Division, particularly in the town of Yaounde. While seriously confronting recalcitrant hawkers at the Mokolo Market in Yaounde, the committee is also on the neck of those operating illegal car wash points in the town. Since the start of the week, boys who have been spearheading such business in the city of Yaounde are being chased by members of the committee for the fight against urban disorder.

In Yaounde, it is common to see cars being cleaned in front of ministerial buildings, along major roads found at the heart of the capital city or around a running stream or tap. Those involved in the business seem not to care about the positioning of the car or the running stream. Individuals just need to park their cars around any ministerial building and by the time they know it, a young man has already cleaned it. Some people are usually surprised when they park their cars somewhere and on coming back, they are warmly greeted by a young man who tells them “I am the one who cleaned your car”. This is how the guys ask remuneration for their job. Some of those involved in the business move around administrative buildings with a bucket, soap and a towel as a sign that they are ready to wash any car.

A source from the Yaounde Urban Council says the phenomenon of young boys transforming major roadways in the town into car wash points must stop for this does not only create disorder but other environmental problems such as the negative impact on the constant wetness of the tar in the areas where they operate. It is also said that unnecessary traffic usually occurs in areas where there are such car wash points since there is disorder in the manner in which people park their cars as well as the uncontrolled manner in which the guys rush to look for on-coming clients.

Insecurity reigns in such areas as some people’s cars have been stolen by people who pass for car washers. The source from the Yaounde City Council says the operation entails the demolition of illegal car wash points around administrative buildings and pavements. No matter how much the guys resist, it is said that the committee for the fight against urban disorder is determined to make sure that order reigns in this informal sector of business and the law applied.
