Cameroon Red Cross Raises Over FCFA 14 Million For Flood Victims

The money is intended to support those affected by recent floods in the country.

It was an exceptional evening at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex on Saturday September 29, 2012. The event was a solidarity night to raise funds to assist victims of recent floods in the Far North, North, East and North West Regions of the country. Thousands of well wishers and sympathisers thronged the venue to extend a hand of friendship and to support in kind and in cash. The public also had an opportunity to send in pledges as the event was telecast live on the national television.

Speaking during the occasion, the President of the Cameroon Red Cross, William Aurelien Eteki Mbomoua hailed the humanitarian actions taken by the Head of State, especially his visit to the northern part of the country to comfort the victims, international organisations and the active presence of the Cameroon Red Cross. He called on all national and international donors, well wishers to give their contributions in order to help the flood victims. According to him, what has happened today to the people of the northern part of the country can happen tomorrow in other regions. He said the victims need food and other items such as mosquito bed nets, blankets, buckets, kitchen utensils, pots and many others. The audience also watched an extract of the Head of State’s speech during his visit to the northern part of the country in which he promised national solidarity and also the creation of a National Solidarity Fund for victims of disasters in the country.

The first part of the night event was marked by an ecumenical service during which men of God from the Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and Muslim faiths stressed on the need to support the flood victims through generous contributions. They prayed for God’s guidance and protection during this trying moments. The service was animated by choir groups like the Congregational Choir and the Nkunkumah David Choir. At the end of the night event, the sum of over FCFA 14 million was collected as well as many gifts in kind. The audience also watched life performances from a host of Cameroonian musicians such as Ange Ebogo Emerand, Odile Ngaska, Ateh Bazor among others. It should be recalled that over 6,000 people were rendered homeless due to the recent floods in country.

Organised by the Cameroon Red Cross in collaboration with the Cameroon Radio Television the event took place in the presence of members of government, the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organisations and guests.
