Cameroon-CAR-Chad: Discussions on Cross-border Roads Advance

The Joint Committee last Thursday September 27 examined ways of surmounting obstacles.

Commitments to contribute to circulation of goods and people while promoting regional integration and development within the Central African Monetary and Economic Community (CEMAC) were re-examined during the Cameroon-Central African Republic-Chad Permanent Joint Committee meeting in Douala on September 27.

Cameroon and Central African Republic (CAR) essentially examined the ways and means of intensifying their occupation in matters of transport by examining the issue of police and customs harassments at checkpoints, with a view to facilitate things. It also reviewed land transport conventions between the two countries, the Global Positioning System (GPS) cargo tracking along the corridors, the allocation of temporary parking places at the Port Authority of Douala (PAD) for CAR transporters, security, parking and resting areas along the corridors and issues relating to the crossing of the cities of Douala and Yaounde, among others.

Cameroon’s delegation to these meetings, apart from the Minister of Transport who is the head of the delegation, still comprise experts from the Ministries of Transport, External Relations, Finance (Customs), Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Public Works, the National Gendarmerie, and the General Delegation for National Security. The CAR party, led by Paul Gondamovo, chargé de mission in the Ministry Transport Development, decried non-respect of certain stipulations by PAD freight managers and proposed a balanced profitability to promote sustainable development in the two political systems.

Dr. Mefiro Oumarou, Cameroon’s Minister Delegate in the Ministry of Transport, at the closing of the meeting praised efforts made to overcome abnormal practices noticed along the Cameroon-CAR stretch which slow development of the two transport systems within the framework of regional integration. The Chadian party to the committee will later meet Cameroonian delegates in November to further discussions on the Cameroon-Chad corridor.
