Akono Petrified

He was down cast at the end of the encounter.

In his first outing ever since his appointment as head coach of the Indomitable Lions, Jean Paul Akono sounded confident from the onset of the encounter preferring to sit on the reserve bench and allow his assistants do the job for him. But when the goals were not coming, he became worried and stood up though with his hands in his pocket. As the encounter progressed, he started agitating, gesticulating and dishing out instructions to the players. At one time, he would call a player and say a few words to him in his ear but this was never reflected on the field of play as the Lions continued with their nonchalant play style as if they were not being led by score.

As it became evident, Cameroon was not going to qualify; Akono remained transfixed by the pole of the reserve box giving the impression he was hiding from the public. He was very crossed every time a player from Cape Verde pretended to sustain an injury as a ploy to while time and equally furious each time the Lions squandered and opportunity. He looked on in utter disbelief and bewilderment as the match drew to an end and benefitted from a down pour at the dying moments to the encounter to disappear from public view. Though Cameroon was victorious, he looked dejected as if he had lost the encounter. To paraphrase Jose Morinho when Inter was beaten by FC Barcelona in the semi-finals of the European Champions League who said ‘it was the sweetest defeat of his life” since Inter qualified by aggregate score. Conversely, we can say Akono had the bitterest victory of his life, since Cameroon failed to qualify for the final round of the 2013 AFCON despite the victory.
