Americans Elect Next President on Tuesday

About 150 million voters will choose between incumbent Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

A good portion of the 150 million eligible voters in the United States of America will today, Tuesday November 6 go to the polls to elect their next President for four years with opinion polls predicting a tight contest. Voters will pick between the major contestants, incumbent Democratic Party candidate, Barack Obama and his Vice President or running mate, Joe Biden; and Republican Party presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Congressman, Paul Ryan.

Counting and preliminary results will begin virtually as soon as the polls start closing and first results will be available in the early hours of Wednesday November 7. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney spent the last day of campaigning yesterday November 5 in a frantic fight for swing state votes, the BBC said. Obama was in Madison, Wisconsin, accompanied by Bruce Springsteen, before leaving for Iowa and Ohio. Romney on the other hand was in Florida, Virginia, New Hampshire and Ohio. The campaign has been most intense in Ohio, which no Republican presidential candidate has ever lost and still made it to the White House. As Americans vote today, analysts say the election outcome will hinge on results in a handful of swing states – states where voters often change their minds.

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are running almost neck-and-neck in national opinion polls. A poll released on Sunday November 4 for ABC News and the Washington Post newspaper put the two candidates at 48 per cent each while voters who term themselves independents split them evenly on 46 per cent. The latest CNN poll puts both men with 49 per cent support. Romney remains favoured among whites, seniors and evangelical Christians while Obama has strong support among women, non-whites and young adults.

The former Massachusetts Governor, Willard Mitt Romney, 65, is a man of vast personal fortune with a successful private career as businessman. The 65-year old Romney wants to crown his phenomenal career by becoming the President of the United States of America. Barack Obama, on the other hand swept into office in 2008 under the banner of change and unity, defeating his rival, John McCain. Born to a Kenyan father and an American mother, the 51-year old former constitutional law lecturer, lawyer, community activist and financial writer, came into national prominence with a keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, befitting his reputation as a brilliant orator.
