Cameroon Bows Out Of Female AFCON

They were beaten 0-2 in the semifinal by host, Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday November 7.

It is the end of the road for the Indomitable Lionesses at the on-going 8th edition of the African women championship taking place in Equatorial Guinea. The Lionesses bowed 0-2 to the Nzalang Nacional in the first semifinal match at the stadium in Malabo thereby thwarting Cameroonian’s dreams of lifting the trophy this time around.

It was a deserved victory for Equatorial Guinea as they proved to be tactically and physically superior to the Cameroonians, dominating the encounter from the beginning to the end. Equatorial Guinea took ascendancy in the game from the onset and got the first goal barely seven minutes into play from a well-organized offensive when Brazilian born, Chisana headed in a neat cross from captain Anioma to obtain her third goal in the tournament. Given the physiognomy of the match, one would have thought Equatorial Guinea would score more goals but the Lionesses stood their ground and occasional took the danger into the Guinean half, though without success. Cameroon however succumbed again at the 40th minute with Anioma moving from an assist to a finisher, hammering a shot from just outside the box to obtain her fifth goal in the competition. The second half turned out to be sterile though the level of play remained high.

Cameroon therefore leaves the competition prematurely after having recorded a defeat, a victory and a draw. They will be playing the classification match for the third position against the vanquished of the other semifinal match between Nigeria and South Africa. So far, the unfolding of the tournament is confirming forecasts as we are edging towards a Nigeria-Equatorial Guinea final. The ousting of the Lionesses is a great blow to feminine football in the country as they need victories to put an end to the levity with which feminine football is treated in the country. hopes were high Cameroon was going to do well in the tournament especially after their gold medal won in the All Africa Games in Maputo and the maiden ever qualification for the Olympic Games; the Lionesses now have to return to the drawing board.
