UNICEF To Intensify Support To Vulnerable Children

The new Resident Representative of UNICEF was received by the Minister of Social Affairs on Thursday.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) office in Cameroon will strengthen its partnership with the Ministry of Social Affairs to provide assistance to vulnerable children. The promise was made by the new Resident Representative of UNICEF in Cameroon, Geoff Wiffin, in an audience granted him by the Minister of Social Affairs, Catherine Bakang Mbock on Thursday November 25, 2012 in Yaounde.

Minister Bakang Mbock lauded UNICEF’s recent grant of FCFA 35 million to the regional delegations for the North and Far North to assist vulnerable children amongst the 90,000 displaced flood victims. She saw the need for new angles of cooperation between both institutions. Areas such as the celebration of the Day of the African Child, assistance to child-support associations, the Children’s Parliament, communication, infrastructure and promotion of the rights of the child were discussed. Other areas worthy of interest included child exploitation and trafficking, capacity building and the wide dissemination of Cameroon’s new social map. Geoff Wiffin praised the ministry’s efforts in favour of vulnerable children and promised UNICEF will consider several of its proposals into consideration in the drafting of its upcoming 2013-2017 Programme of Cooperation.
