New Cooperation Agreements for Cameroon-Congo Finalised

The seventh session of the Cameroon-Congo Joint Commission began in Yaounde yesterday December 19.

Cameroon and Congo want to use the seventh session of their Joint Cooperation Commission that started in Yaounde, December 19, 2012 to enlarge the legal framework of their bilateral cooperation through finalizing and signing new agreements. The new agreements are in the domains of demarcation of common boundary, joint exploitation of iron ore deposits in Mbalam in South east Cameroon and Nabenba in North Congo, construction of a Joint University with campuses in Sangmelima in Cameroon and Ouesso in Congo, sharing of experiences in cocoa and coffee production, as well as strengthening cooperation in transport, security, infrastructure development, training, energy, environment, small and medium sized enterprises, tourism and telecommunication sectors.

The leader of Cameroon’s delegation, Minister of External Relations, Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo and that of Congo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Basile Ikouebe disclosed the key areas of negotiations in the ongoing session yesterday, December 19. They co-chaired the opening ceremony at the Ministry of External Relations in the presence of some Cameroon cabinet ministers and senior officials from Congo. The Yaounde Joint Cooperation Commission comes three years after the sixth session held in Brazzaville, Congo from January 20 to 22, 2009.

The Yaounde dialogue and consultation session, Moukoko Mbonjo said, was an occasion to evaluate the evolution of bilateral cooperation between the two countries especially through ongoing and planned projects. He cited the ceremony to validate the twinning of the towns of Sangmelima in Cameroon and Owando in Congo that will take place in Sangmelima, tomorrow, December 21 in the presence of the Congolese Foreign Affairs Minister, the construction of the Sangmelima–Ouesso road, construction of hydro-electricity plant in Chollot, Congo, interconnection of two countries by optical fibre. The minister said Congo’s new Ambassador to Cameroon, Bouanga Kalou Gisèle who presented her letters of credence to President Paul Biya on December 6, 2012 and the Ambassador of Cameroon to Congo, Komidor Njimoluh, appointed in 2008, will further accelerate the fostering of fraternal cooperation ties between the two countries.
