Nkongmondo: Moving With Changing Tides

Reputed as one of Douala’s notorious neighbourhoods, the area is “turning a new leaf”.

For the second consecutive year, the annual end of year festival in the Douala I Subdivision known as “Nkongmondo Forever” held from December 28 to 30, 2012. Apart from commemorating end of year festivities, aimed particularly at giving the area a facelift. The initiative is prone by one of Nkongmondo’s elite and member of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) party, Moïse Malep. Addressing the press at the opening ceremony, he explained that the overall objective was to offer a common ground for celebrations, while brainstorming about development issues. Thus various activities like human investment, wrestling competition, food exhibition, musical concert and the award of Information and Computer Technology kits to the Government Primary School highlighted the three-day event. Also, ELECAM officials opened a temporal site adjacent to the ceremonial ground, for registration on the voter’s lists at proximity.

The event which saw its climax on Sunday December 30 was preceded by the official inauguration of a small bridge by the Government Delegate to the Douala City Council in July, 2012. It would be recalled that Nkong-mondo was reputed as one of the hit areas when Cameroon witnessed political uprisings prior to independence. With years, the area was renowned for its insecurity and lawlessness, which according to the natives, accounts for the low level of development. Today, the sustainable development comity, led by Moïse Malep is putting all hands on deck to attain a brighter future.
