Human Rights: Cameroon’s Review Report Presented

The report will be evaluated this year by the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Civil society activists alongside officials of different ministries in the country converged at the Ministry of Justice in Yaounde yesterday, January 8, 2013 to validate Cameroon’s Universal Periodic Review Report for the United Nations Human Rights Council. The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Cameroon that was conducted between 2008 and 2012 is a mechanism through which the UN Human Rights Council reviews the human rights records of all UN Member States on an ongoing basis.
Opening a one-day workshop in Yaounde yesterday, the Minister Delegate in the Ministry of Justice, Jean-Pierre Fogui, said the new and unique instrument of the Human Rights Council (HRC) aims at improving the human rights situation of each of the 193 UN Member States. He therefore challenged participants to scrutinise the document which highlights the situation of human rights in Cameroon from the perspective of protection, participation in the management of public affairs, right to feeding, access to employment, fight against impunity and access to information, just to name a few. Recommendations of the last review, Jean-Pierre Fogui stressed, must be implemented as the country looks forward to being re-examined by May this year for the second cycle covering the period 2012-2015.
“The fight for human dignity,” the Minister Delegate said, was the purpose of the State-driven process, under the auspices of the Human Rights Council, which provides the opportunity for Cameroon to declare what actions it has taken to improve the human rights situation and fulfil its obligations.
The need to auto-evaluate the road covered and that to-be, to promote the values of the country and above all, to be sincere on what remains to be done, remain the hardest knots to crack, Jean-Pierre Fogui said, as the country’s Human Rights Universal Periodic Review will be scrutinised before the United Nation’s Human Rights Council later this year.
