South West Hits 139,649 Registered Voters

The figure as at January 12, 2013 is for 23.02 per cent of potential electors

As at January 12, 2013, a total of 139,649 voters have been registered by ELECAM in the six administrative Divisions of the South West Region. The number is still far below their target of 606,469 potential voters earmarked during the launch of the exercise last October 3, 2012.
Speaking to Cameroon Tribune yesterday, January 14, Emmanuel Njang, Regional Delegate of ELECAM for the South West, expressed skepticism as to meeting the target which to him was derived from the previous election figures. “As you and I know, these figures were conceived from many double cases of registration in the past,” Mr. Njang explained. But who gave the figures? Mr. Njang, however, admits that “the statistics were gotten from the past election data, which you and I know were fraught with erroneous difficulties and were to be corrected.” He said registration electronic kits will be borrowed from slow registering areas to quicken the exercise in the needy places.
Of the figure attained in the South West Region so Far, Fako is leading with 50,009 already registered, that is, 30.95 percent away from their target of 161,559 potential voters. Meme Division follows suit with 32,815 registered, 24.8 percent of their targeted 132,291 potential voters. Kupe Muanenguba is third with 13.179 already enrolled, or 21.29 percent of their 61.883 prospective voters. Manyu surprisingly comes in the fourth position having registered only 18, 484 voters, or 17.01 percent of their initial 108,631 probable voters. Then, Lebialem now tails the exercise with only 10,983 registered voters out of 83,383 targeted as their electorate.
As entertained in several elite and political meetings in the Region held recently, accessibility difficulties due to poor roads, the sheer lack of the will called apathy and the fact that the exercise will continue till end of February may explain the current trend on the ground in the South West Region.
