A man passing for a gendarme officer and launching assaults at commuters on-board taxis was apprehended at Bépanda Omnisport on Sunday. Brainy Atakung Tekwec, who is being charged with illegal detention of security gadgets, among others, told local gendarmes how he operated under fictitious names, like Godlove Sama Tatah and Ernest Ngong Ndong.
Nabbed at 4:30 pm at the Government Primary School, Bépanda Omnisport, the lawless Atakung Tekwec, who was dressed in national gendarmerie uniform bearing the rank of Major – was head of a gang of four specialised in assaults on-board taxis. The accused and his accomplice, whom the former claimed is unknown to him, had just attacked 50-year-old Sidonie Watat in a taxi and collected FCFA 90.000.
Security men of the Police Rapid Intervention Unit on routine parade in the area arrested the purported ‘gendarme officer’ whom they rightly suspected was fake. Atakung alias Sama was taken to the 7th District Police Station at Bépanda for further investigations.
