Group B, The Pool Of Death

The AFCON 2013 group comprises D.R.Congo, Ghana, Mali and Niger.

Group ‘B’ is going to be one of the most difficult groups at the 29th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. It comprises some of the heavy weights of Africa football like Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali and Niger.

Ghana is clearly the favourite of the group having won the most coveted continental title in football four times. Though a star studded squad, the Black Stars have successful harnessed their talents into a formidable football squad that sends cold running down the spines of their opponents. They lost the classification match against Mali in the 28th edition in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Hence the group match between the Black Stars and Eagles of Mali is going to smack of revenge.

Mali on the other hand has been a regular customer to the final round of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations since 2006 when they hosted the competition, with successful campaigns ending at the semi final stage. It will therefore be a set back should Mali fail to clinch a second round spot. After lying fallow for long, the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the rising football powerhouses on the continent.

The bulk of the players come from Tout Puissant Mazembe and have been used playing together and are capable of holding their ground against any football side on the continent. Niger happens to be the only outsider in the group and quarter final spot will constitute an exploit for the nation which qualified for the first time for the final round of the Africa Cup of Nation only in 2012.
