50th Anniversary of Reunification: Public Works Minister Inspects Road Project

Minister Patrice Amba Salla was in Buea on January 26 to inspect work ahead of the event.

The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Cameroon’s reunification, Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai has expressed the wish of the people of the South West and those of Buea in particular, that rehabilitation and the tarring of roads within Buea and its periphery should be hastened. He was speaking at the Governor’s office, Friday 25 January 2013 while welcoming Public Works Minister Patrice Amba Salla who was in Fako Division for a working visit to inspect ongoing tarring works on the Mile 4 – Wotutu – Sasse - Buea road. He entreated Minister Amba Salla that work on the Afosi – Bokwai – Muea road, the Mile 16 – Sasse road and the Muea – Mondoni road should be hastened to ease mobility in Buea.
After listening to the worries of two prominent local elite, Hon. Monjowa Lifaka Emilia (Vice President of the National Assembly) and Mbella Moki Charles (Mayor, Buea Council), Minister Amba Salla expressed satisfaction with ongoing works on the Mile 4 – Wotutu – Sasse – Buea road. However, much needs to done and the Minister pledged that “extra efforts” will be made not only for the scheduled deadline of 4 March 2013 to be respected, but for a durable job that will remain for posterity. He said the government was committed to what he termed “this priority road” that links Buea to the seaside resort town of Limbe that will lodge hundreds of guests during the Reunification celebration.
Sharing the Minister’s optimism is the population living along the stretch. But their main worry is the dust that has triggered airborne diseases as vehicles ply the road with terrifying speed. “The contractor does not care to water the dusty road. As a result, we are suffering from diverse airborne diseases,” a villager complained. Others ring alarm bells and suggest that the contractor must construct speed breads. If not, as one villager puts it, “this road will be a death trap. Drivers speed carelessly and have no respect for pedestrians.”
On other roads, the Minister voiced government’s determination to make the South West Region a vast construction site in terms of road projects. He announced that works on the Kumba – Mamfe road will commence by August this year. The Kumba – Mundemba road, the Mamfe – Ikok road and other road projects to dis-enclave the region came to the forefront.
Before he said quits pledging to return, Minister Amba Salla reassured the South West population that though some of these projects are not directly pegged with the Reunification celebration, government’s objective is to transform the nightmarish road network in the region and construct roads that will remain for generations.
