House Speaker Receives Cuban Emissary

Hector Igarza Cabrera promised cooperation in health and education.

Cooperation between Cuba and Cameroon is growing. The country’s special envoy, Hector Igarza Cabrera, was on January 31, 2013 received in audience by the President of the National Assembly, Right Honourable Cavaye Yeguie Djibril. The envoy equally came to share a message of solidarity from Cuba’s Parliament with Cameroon’s National Assembly. Hector Igarza Cabrera was accompanied by Mrs Alba Beatriz Soto Pimentel, Cuban Ambassador to Cameroon with residence in Brazzaville.

To enhance this cooperation, the country has chosen the sectors of health and education to mark their presence in Cameroon. “The main sector we are proposing for strengthened cooperation is health,” the Cuban emissary explained. “Cuban doctors have been in Africa for the past 50 years but in the case of Cameroon, we have been far away but cooperation has been fairly well, but not well developed. So now, we think that it’s time to come back and work a little bit”, Igarza Cabrera told the press after the audience.

“We are looking at possibilities of sending our medics to Cameroon,” he disclosed. “Our President, Fidel Castro is faring well. He is retired but in very good health”, said Hector Igarza Cabrera, Director of the South Saharan Unit in Cuba’s External Relations Ministry.

At the level of education, Cuba is looking at possibilities of offering scholarships to Cameroonians. The country has developed a strategy to fight against illiteracy that can be used everywhere, the Cuban emissary explained. Besides, Cuba also intends to cooperate with Cameroon in the economic sector.
