Nigerian High Commissioner Visits ELECAM

Hadiza Mustapha had discussions with Elections Cameroon Board Chairman on February 15.

The Nigerian High Commissioner to Cameroon, Hadiza Mustapha on Friday, February 15, 2013 was fully briefed on the functioning of Cameroon’s elections and referenda institution, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) and the ongoing biometric recompilation of the electoral registers in Cameroon. She had discussions with the Electoral Board Chairman of ELECAM, Dr Fonkam Azu’u Samuel in the presence of some members of the electoral board.

At the beginning of the discussions that later on continued behind closed doors, Hadiza Mustapha said her courtesy visit to the headquarters of ELECAM was the continuation of her familiarization tours of government institutions in Cameroon since taking up duty some six months ago. She said the visit was to enable her know more about ELECAM and the ongoing biometric recompilation of the electoral registers.

Talking to the press after the discussions, the Chairman of ELECAM, Fonkam Azu’u said, “The High Commissioner came to be fully briefed on what we are doing and to ask questions and seek a few clarifications.” He disclosed that Elections Cameroon was cooperating with the elections governing institution of Nigeria, the Independent National Elections Commission of Nigeria. “W e share good practices,” he said. Nigeria also did biometric registration of voters ahead of the last presidential election and took a shorter time, Fonkam Azu’u explained because its spent more money and acquired many electoral kits.
