Northern Flood Victims Resettled

The third statutory meeting of the follow up committee took place on Thursday in Yaounde.

The situation of victims of floods of August and September 2012 in the Far North and North Regions has come to normal. Most of the victims have returned to their families. The revelations were made during the third statutory meeting of the follow up committee on the management of emergency assistance to flood victims in the North and Far North Regions of the country on Thursday March 14, 2013 in Yaounde. The purpose of the meeting was to asses the current situation and to prepare for challenges ahead especially with the coming of the rainy season.

Speaking during the occasion, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation, Emmanuel Réné Sadi said the main concern of government is to make sure that in case of any floods in future the people should be less affected. He called on the different administrations to continue with the work they are doing in the field. He wished that they will continue to work in synergy in order to improve the conditions of the victims and that the victims will respect the new settlement areas.

The Minister of Public Health, André Mama Fouda and the Minister of State Property, Land Tenure and Survey, Jacqueline Koung à Bessike as well as the representatives of the other partner ministries gave presentations on their contributions and measures taken to protect the population, prevent them from dangers in future catastrophes and also to improve on their living conditions.  The Governor of the North Region, Joseph Otto Wilson said most of the flood victims have gone back to their various families. He said there are still two camps in one village; that of Badoudi I and Badoudi II were there are still some victims. But these two camps, he said, will soon become new settlement areas.

The Governor of the Far North Region, Augustine Awa Fonka said in the Logone and Shari Divisions all the flood victims have returned to their homes. Meanwhile, in the case of the Mayo Danay Division some of them are still in the resettlement camps. He explained that all the aid received has been distributed. “What is left now is to see how to handle the post management of the crisis which is that of ensuring that the people should not go back to the risky zones” he said.
