Uhuru Kenya Confirmed As Kenya's Next President

Uhuru Kenya Confirmed As Kenya's Next PresidentThe Supreme Court over the weekend overruled the petition of his main rival, Raila Odinga.

Uhuru Kenyatta was on Saturday, March 30, 2013 confirmed as Kenya’s next President following a ruling by Kenya’s Supreme Court, The Independent newspaper reported. The highly anticipated announcement came after weeks of uncertainty surrounding the March 4, 2013 elections that gave Deputy Prime Minister, Kenyatta 50.07 per cent of the vote as against 43.31 per cent for Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In response to the court decision, Uhuru Kenyatta promised to serve all the country's people without discrimination. Meanwhile, Raila Odinga said he respected the ruling but would look at other peaceful ways of resolving the dispute. He wished the President-elect well and called on his supporters to avoid bloodshed, BBC reported.

Reacting to the ruling, hundreds of rioting youth in Odinga’s home town of Kisumu were met with warning shots and teargas by police. In what appears to be an incident unrelated to the elections, a Moslem gang of 50 activists calling themselves the Mombasa Republic Council, MRC, raided a casino in the coastal town of Malindi on Saturday. Six members of the group were reportedly killed by police, and at least one police officer died. The group claims to be working on behalf of Moslems in the region that are allegedly being discriminated against.

Uhuru Kenyatta, 51, will now be sworn in as Kenya’s fourth President on April 9, 2013 in spite of an on-going investigation by the International Criminal Court, ICC. Kenyatta and his Deputy President-Elect, William Ruto, face charges relating to the bloody aftermath of Kenya’s last presidential elections. They are scheduled to stand trial at The Hague, in The Netherlands in July and late May 2013, respectively.

The US and European Union say they will only maintain limited relations with an incumbent leader facing criminal convictions. Kenyatta has said he plans to perform his new role while standing trial, using video-conferencing, if necessary.
