Company Driver Vamooses With FCFA 50 Million

At press time, the gendarmerie had opened investigations, though the suspect was still at large.

It was an ordinary Tuesday April 2, 2013 working day that started for workers of a Douala-based company known as Transvaal. Dealing in the collection and transportation of money from enterprises, the company’s agents were charged with the daily responsibility of safely transporting huge sums in the economic capital. However, the day’s end was strangely peculiar, given the turnout of event. This was marked by the unexpected disappearance of one of Transvaal’s van drivers, alongside the sum of FCFA 50 million.

According to field report, that fateful Tuesday, the agents were on the field to collect monies for onward transportation as usual. CT gathered that the driver and other agents were operating at the Bassa industrial zone, and had made several stops in a number of enterprises. At about 11 am, they stopped at another collection point, and went in as usual, leaving the driver in the vehicle with the already collected money in a bag. It was only after the company agents came out of the building that they discovered with astonishment the disappearance of the driver, alongside the money. After a random search of the environs, they learnt to their greatest surprise that the driver, whose names CT got as Ebombe Bertrand, had vamoosed. The forces of law and order were immediately alerted and investigations opened. At press time, the suspect was still at large, while attempts to get to Transvaal officials proved futile. Meanwhile, a few workers had been withheld at the gendarmerie for questioning in order to throw more light on the affair.
