South West: Political Parties Entice Electors With Lofty Messages

While the ruling CPDM harps on party loyalty, the opposition SDF urges electors to vote candidates with conviction and trust.

The battle lines have now been drawn in the South West Region as the build-up to the 14 April first-ever Senate election in Cameroon narrows. Two out of the four political formations in the region are in the starting blocks. With the official launching of campaigns, the CPDM party candidates for the Senatorial race in the region just like those of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) are multiplying meetings in a bid to outsmart each other at the polls.

In separate campaigns organised in Buea and Kumba by the ruling Cameron People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) and the SDF respectively, the Senatorial aspirants enticed electors with lofty messages to lure them in their favour. While the CPDM hinges on party loyalty, the SDF calls on municipal Councilors who constitute the Electoral College to place the Region high above partisan politics and vote candidates with conviction and trust.

In his campaign that held in the yet to be completed Council edifice, Charles Mbella Moki, Mayor of Buea and one of CPDM’s candidate in the Region called on Buea Councilors to remain loyal to the party. He warned against betrayal especially during the election period while promising to share fallouts as a Senator to all in one way or the other.  The campaign brought together Councilors of Buea municipality as well as CPDM Fako III party executives.

Meanwhile, the SDF list leader, George Likiye also launched the party’s campaign at the Kumba II Council Hall.  Mr. Likiye appealed to all Councilors in the region to vote for Senators with conviction, trust and believe that they are voting for leaders who will defend their interest.  He said South West Councilors have the opportunity to effect positive change objectively in the up-coming Senate election, which to him should not be based on toeing party lines but rather on the potentialities of various candidates. Likiye urged the Councilors to place the South West Region beyond partisan politics. He announced that the SDF campaign shall go to all the six Divisions of the Region.
