Religion: Catholic Bishops Evaluate Activities

The 38th Plenary Assembly of the Bishops of Cameroon opened in Yaoundeon April 8, 2013.

Catholic bishops in Cameroon are meeting in Yaounde for the 38th Plenary Assembly of Bishops of Cameroon holding from April 7 to 13, 2013. This year’s plenary session which comes two weeks after the celebration of the feast of Easter is holding under the theme “The Year of Faith”.

The President of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon, Mgr. Joseph Atanga said the theme of this year invites Christians to revise their faith. “We have to go back to the documents of Vatican II, to see whether whatever we say, do or think really match with our faith in God,” he said.  The session was an opportunity for the bishops of Cameroon to evaluate the work given to the different commissions during last year’s plenary session and to see the different problems facing the Catholic Church in Cameroon.

The session began with work in the different commissions yesterday April 8, 2013 and today. After these two days the results of the commissions will be presented to the standing committee. The bishops are expected to take decisions whether they will have to review the classical way of acting and doing pastoral work in parishes, dioceses in particular and Cameroon in general. After that, they will come out with a document for the pastoral year 2013. According to the official programme, the solemn opening of the 38th plenary session will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 10, 2013.  A series of conferences will be given to the public as from today. The bishops will work behind closed doors on Thursday and Friday before the plenary session officially closes on Saturday April 13, 2013.
