South Africans Remember Democracy Sacrifices

The High Commission on May 29 in Yaounde celebrated the 19th edition of Freedom Day.

The South African High Commissioner to Cameroon, Her Excellency Zanele Makina has spoken of her country’s vision of ensuring the creation of a safer, prosperous and stable Africa. Speaking at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel on Monday, April 29, 2013 on the occasion of the 19th edition of Freedom Day – South Africa’s National Day - the High Commissioner said her country was firm in its determination to find solutions to the challenges facing Africa.

She said her country’s engagements were informed by its foreign policy programmes and activities that continue to rest on a number of key focal areas. These, she explained, are the prioritisation of the African agenda, strengthening regional integration through the Southern African Development Community, strengthening south-south co-operation, enhancing relations with the north, and participating in global systems of governance.

Miss Makina recalled how on April 27, 1994, South Africans of all races participated in the first ever democratic elections to mark the end of Apartheid and the beginning of South Africa`s transition to democracy. Freedom Day, she pointed out, represents peace, unity, and the restoration of human dignity for all South Africans. The day is also an occasion to remember and salute Africans and friends across the world whose solidarity made it possible for South Africans to defeat Apartheid, a crime against humanity, High Commissioner Makina explained.

Representing the Ministry of External Relations, MINREX, at the event was the Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with the Commonwealth, Dione Ngute. Other government dignitaries at the ceremony included the Vice Prime Minister, Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Relations with the Assemblies, Ahmadou Ali, the Minister of Finance, Alamine Ousmane Mey, the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Gregoire Owona, and MINREX’s Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with the Islamic World, Adoum Gargoum.
