A networking group was formed recently to ensure book collections are relevant and attractive to students.

To set up, motivate use and create alternative options to school libraries was the focus of a one-day reflection for 30 library staff from Secondary Education Schools in Fako Division of the South West Region. The exercise was to mark the World Book Day commemorated on 23 April, 2013.

To crown their gathering, the librarians resolved to tear down obstacles and convert libraries into attractive study centres for teachers and students. The Fako librarians also constituted themselves into a networking group to transform libraries from decorative book stores into veritable functional public space where reading is advanced.

As the architect of the librarians’ come-together, the National Book Development Council (NBDC) offered tutorials under the theme: “Celebrating books-library awareness in schools.” As a prelude to the event, the NBDC Chairman, George Ngwane, organised a radio quiz, facilitated a motorbike book caravan, conducted a book exhibition and donated books to GPS Bwitingi and the Saint Luke Medical Foundation in Bokwai. He underscored the need to preserve and use books despite the growing influence of TV and internet.
Pedagogues also agreed that the effort would remedy the declining language power of students and teachers alike.  Equally, the trend shall culminate in encouraging writing so as to better store knowledge and liberate the school system from dependence on foreign writers.
