Gov’t Lobbies For Justice Asuagbor’s Re-election at AU Human Rights Commission

http://cameroon-tribune.cmShe was presented to African diplomats in Yaounde on May 15, 2013.

The Minister of External Relations, Prof. Pierre Moukouko Mbonjo on May 15, 2013 presented Cameroonian born Justice Lucy Asuagbor to some African diplomats in Yaounde as Cameroon lobbies for her re-election as African Union (AU) Commissioner for Human and People’s Rights of the African Union. She is Cameroon’s candidate to the esteemed position for which elections are due May 23, 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Her re-election would mark the recognition by the continent of her talent and professionalism.

Since July 2010, Chief Justice Lucy Asuagbor, alongside 10 other Africans, has been serving as members of the AU Commission after being chosen by ballot to end the tenure of Mrs Angela Melo who resigned. Her three-year tenure ends in July this year and she has therefore decided to go in for election as Commissioner.

Boasting over 30-year career in the Cameroon Judiciary, Chief Justice Lucy Asuagbor, while in ACHPR, increased efforts to open and meet international standards in the domain of human rights promotion and protection in Cameroon and Africa. She took part in 11 AU Commission sessions during which she examined some themes and documents notably on communication related to complaints submitted against States, relations between the commission and national human right institutions, periodic evaluation of State reports as well as mission reports on the promotion of human rights carried out by members of the Commission.

“Looking at the realities of the human rights situation on the continent, I once again wish to contribute, based on my experience as well as to attain the noble objective of reducing the number of people affected by HIV/AIDS,” declared Lucy Asuagbor. “Our continent currently counts 68 per cent of the world’s population living with HIV/AIDS; women constitute majority of the threat on the continent”, she pointed out. Another challenge worth surmounting, according to her, is to redouble efforts towards putting an end to the violation of the rights of people with AIDS as well as those of indigenous people.

Justice Lucy Asuagbor was born on September 9, 1951 in the South West Region of Cameroon.
