Misty Haze Looms over Resumption of Professional League

The league president has refused to disburse funds for match officials.

The mist is yet to dissipate over the resumption of the championship this weekend. Though the president of the Professional League, Pierre Semengue and the association of elite club presidents jointly signed a communiqué scheduling the resumption of the championship for the weekend running from May 18 to 19, it is not certain whether the matches are going to take place. The problem this time is due to the refusal of the president of the League to sign the minutes of the board of directors meeting which took place last Wednesday and the non disbursement of funds for the payment of referees and other match officials.

Contacted on the issue, General Pierre Semengue said he couldn’t sign something which was not in conformity with the regulations. He disclosed that he was in the process of writing a report to the authorities and refrained from commenting any further on the issue. However, unconfirmed information say the general stormed out of the board meeting in anger after the president of the association of elite club presidents, Emile Onambele Zibi, was included as a board member of the League. If true, this would mean the animosity between the two men is yet from over even though they publicly buried the hatchet under the mediation of the Minister of Sports and Physical Education.

Meanwhile according to the fixtures of the 10th day of play of the MTN Elite One championship, league leaders Astres will be travelling to Yaounde to challenge local side, Tonnerre Kalara club in the top match of the day. Astres will be out to consolidate their grip on the championship whereas Tonnerre will be struggling to improve their standing on the point tally sheet. The runner up, New stars and third placed, Unisport both on 15 points will be out reduce the margin separating them from the leaders. It will also be interesting to find out the performance of the lone Cameroonian representative in continental competitions, Coton, who have been waning on the national scene but thrive at the level of the continent.
