Cameroon-Saudi Arabia: New Cooperation Agreement Imminent

Ambassador Mahmoud Bin Hussein Qattan organised a farewell dinner on May 16 in Yaounde.

The outgoing Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Cameroon, His Excellency Mahmoud Bin Hussein, on Thursday, May 16, 2013 announced the imminent signing of a bilateral cooperation agreement between Cameroon and Saudi Arabia, expressing hope that it would help in fostering relations. He was speaking at a farewell dinner at his Bastos, Yaounde residence to mark the end of his three-year, eight-month stay in the country. Ambassador Qattan said relations between Cameroon and Saudi Arabia have grown over the years, with the latter offering food assistance to flood victims in northern Cameroon and for other emergency relief cases. Dates were also donated to nursing mothers and the general public. Other achievements include cooperation in university education, Saudi funding of the tarring of the Sangmelima-Djoum Road in the South Region, and the offer of a mosque and Islamic complex in Kedjum Ketingoh (or Big Babanki) in Tubah Subdivision, Mezam Division of the North West Region. Also, several Saudi medical missions have visited the country, attending to the health needs of hundreds of Cameroonians. Responding, the Dean of the Diplomatic Community in Cameroon, Chadian Ambassador, His Excellency Yoosem-Kontou Noudjiamlao, said the outgoing Saudi envoy did much to foster relations between Africa and his country. He urged him to continue to serve not only as Cameroon’s diplomat back home, but also for the whole continent. He then presented a gift on behalf of his peers to Ambassador Qattan. The event was attended among others by the Minister of State for Tourism and Leisure, Bouba Bello Maigari, Finance Minister, Alamine Ousmane Mey, the Minister Delegate in the Ministry of the Economy, Plan and Regional Development, Yaouba Abdoulaye, and the Secretary of State for Forest and Wildlife, Mrs. Koulsoumi Boukar. The Ministry of External Relations was represented by Mohamadou Moustafa, the Director of Asian and Pacific Affairs and Relations with the Organisation of Islamic Conference, OIC countries.
