German Investors at Star Building

Gunter Nooke and Prime Minister Yang discussed the establishment of a fertilizer factory.

The Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang and the German Chancellor’s Personal Representative for Africa, in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Gunter Nooke yesterday,   May 21, 2013 in Yaounde discussed the project to establish a factory to process natural gas into fertilizer in Cameroon. This was one of the main topics discussed at the Star Building when Prime Minister Yang received Angela Merkel’s Personal Representative for Africa in the presence of the German Ambassador to Cameroon, Klaus-Ludwig Keferstein.

“We discussed the agreement that will be signed between the German company, Ferrostaal GmbH and the National Hydrocarbons Corporation of Cameroon today, May 22, 2013”, Gunter Nooke told reporters after their discussions. The agreement concerns the construction of a factory to process natural gas into fertilizer in Cameroon.  The Representative of the German Chancellor for Africa said they put the project on track in 2011 when he first visited Cameroon. It marks a departure from development cooperation between the governments of the two countries to private sector investment. The fertilizer factory project, he said, will be one of the biggest investments by a German company in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The German government official and Prime Minister Yang also discussed the possibility of setting up the branch of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cameroon. Branches of the school already exist in South Africa, Senegal and Ghana.  He said the German government that supports the project, considers it a good opportunity to broaden and strengthen the bases of the elite in Mathematical Sciences.
