Central African Human Rights Institutions Adopt Action Plan

The members of the Network of National Human Rights Institutions in Central Africa, NHRIs, on May 31, 2013 in Yaounde created its organs, validated statutes, adopted a two-year action plan and examined ways of contributing financially for the sustainability of the network.

Out of the seven-member countries of the network, only Burundi, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Chad and Gabon attended the Yaounde come together.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of  the first meeting of members of the network, the Chairman of Cameroon’s National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms  said, “The meeting that brings together National Human Rights Institutions from Burundi, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Gabon and Chad, is an opportunity for us to strengthen our cooperation ties and our friendship and also a platform for us to reflect on how our institutions should contribute to the consolidation of the rule of law, through concrete measures to promote and protect human rights in our geographical sub-region, Central Africa.” Dr Divine Chemuta Banda traced the origin of the network back to the Brazzaville workshop of June 14 to 16, 2010, up to the Libreville capacity-building workshop of June 18 to 20, 2012 that led to the adoption of the statutes of the network. He disclosed that three member-institutions had already signed the statute and the remaining members were to validate it in Yaounde.
