ICC Demands Complementary Information on Laurent Gbagbo Trial

The court wants more evidence before charging the former Ivorian leader.

The International Criminal Court, ICC, based at The Hague in The Netherlands, on Monday, June 3, 2013 said it wanted more evidence before deciding whether to try Côte d’Ivoire’s former President, Laurent Gbagbo, for his role in a bloody election standoff two years ago.

According to the AFP news agency, the pre-trial chamber adjourned hearing on confirmation charges and requested the Prosecutor to consider providing further evidence or conducting further investigations into the charges against Gbagbo. The court therefore gave the prosecution until November 15, 2015 to provide sufficient evidence for pre-trial proceedings to continue.

According to the ICC website, the Pre-trial Chamber also proposed six issues on which the Prosecutor may consider providing further information or conducting further investigations. They are the activities of all armed groups opposed to pro-Gbagbo forces in and around Abidjan between November 2010 and May 2011, the organisational structure of the pro-Gbagbo forces and their evolution during the relevant time period, and alleged cases of sexual violence.

Gbagbo, 68, is accused of fomenting a wave of violence that swept Côte d’Ivoire following a controversial presidential poll in November 2010. Four months of fighting followed, ravaging the world’s largest cocoa producer and leaving some 3,000 people dead, according to the United Nations.

Gbagbo was captured in mid-April 2011 when Alassane Ouattara’s forces, with French and UN backing, overran his heavily fortified compound in the Ivorian economic capital, Abidjan. He was transferred into the custody of the ICC which had issued an arrest warrant against him and has been held in the institution’s detention in The Hague ever since.
