Even though life on earth is believed to be constantly spiraling out of control, man regrettably, is behind much of what robs him of peace, stability and progress. Natural calamities come and go, leaving behind scars that take time to heal. But what a shock that human selfishness, sadistic trends and even stupidity have become a greater threat to peace, stability and progress! Fortunately, this can be prevented.
Whether this greed, stupidity, sadistic trends manifest themselves in piracy, burglary, assaults and senseless ousting of leaders, the nightmare has indeed become so traumatizing that no one can consider the Yaoundé Summit of Heads of State and Government, ECOWAS, ECCAS and GGC on Maritime Safety in the Gulf Guinea an ostentatious confab.
A reservoir of precious carbons, rich in fauna and flora capable of producing millions of barrels per day is threatened by piracy, but must be stalled before the worst happens.
The Yaoundé Summit and the declaration expected at the end of the meeting, is a timely step taken in the interest of the eight West and Central African countries, other African nations and the rest of the world. But to be secured, safe and free from armed robbery in the waters of the Gulf, the 8 nations of this region, African nations and the international Community at large must commit themselves to effective cooperation aimed at getting rid of the enemy before he gets rid of them and their resources.
This demands peace and political stability within the nations themselves without which it is difficult for international relations to be sane and effective.
Through effective cooperation stemming from sane relations, it would be much easier to strategize, track down perpetrators of piracy and armed robbery with the aim of ensuring safety and security of human and material resources.
From the concern nations of the gulf of Guinea and their socio-economic groupings have shown through this Yaoundé Summit, it is believed friendly nations, cooperation partners, and the international community at large will continue to demonstrate their commitment to the struggle for security, safety and stability in this highly blessed region of our global village.
