Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Discuss Commonwealth Elections

The Speaker of the Sierra Leonean Parliament met Cameroonian MPs in Yaounde on Thursdqy yesterday June 27, 2013 to discuss forthcoming Commonwealth Parliamentary Association elections in South Africa.

A delegation from the regional headquarters of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) led by the Speaker of the Sierra Leonean Parliament, Hon. Justice N. B Stronge, held a working session with CPA members of Cameroon’s National Assembly yesterday June 27, 2013, with focus on upcoming elections into the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP).

The session was chaired by Deputy Speaker, Hon. Emilia Lifaka Monjowa, representing House Speaker, Hon. Cavaye Yeguié Djibril. Hon. Justice N. B Stronge was mandated to Cameroon alongside a member of the Ghanaian Task Force in charge of Presidential Projects, Hon. Cletus Avoka.

The visiting delegation briefed their Cameroonian counterparts on the continent’s choice of the Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga as the candidate for upcoming CWP elections in South Africa. He said the continent has decided to vote their candidate as a bloc. Hon. Stronge challenged Cameroonian members to have the maximum number of women in their delegation during the election so as to increase their candidate’s chances of winning. He also appealed to members to update their subscriptions.

Prior to Hon. Justice N. B Stronge discourse, Hon. Emilia Lifaka Monjowa spoke of the commitment of Cameroon’s Parliament and government to CPA. “It has helped push forward for Parliamentary democracy and today, I am happy to tell you that we are in bicameral Parliament, moving within the framework of the ideals of our Constitution and the CPA,” she noted.

They also discussed the July 21-27, 2013 44th CPA Africa Regional Conference to hold in Windhoek, Namibia and the sixth Commonwealth Youth Parliament to hold in Andhra Pradesh, India from October 20-26, 2013.
